Animal Welfare Regulatory Training

West Virginia University is required to provide training and keep records for all persons who care for or use animals in research, teaching, training or exhibition.

Animal Welfare Regulatory/Core Training
IACUC Research training throught the CITI program is required by all research personnel listed on an animal research protocol.

West Virginia University has approved the use of the CITI training program for all individuals involved in vertebrate animal research.

You should go to https://www.citiprogram.org. Once there, click on the link Register Here. Under the Institution selection, scroll to West Virginia University. Then, you will create a username and password (use of GroupWise user name will facilitate our keeping track of you). Under Question 3, select the appropriate courses. NOTE: you do not have to complete the training in one session!

Health Questionnaire
Anyone entering OLAR is now required to complete the Animal Health Questionnaire, which needs to be updated on an annual basis. Failure to complete the questionnaire may result in being denied access to the animal facilities.

If you are no longer working with animals, please contact the ACUC office (acuc@mail.wvu.edu) and they will remove you from the protocol.

If you are conducting field work, you do not have to complete this questionnaire. However, you can still contact Occupational Medicine if you have concerns.

Anyone reporting serious medical conditions will need medical clearance before being permitted to work with animals. Occupational Medicine will provide free medical evaluations as needed for all employees. Student Health will provide medical evaluations for students. You must have a current tetanus vaccine. ( Physician Animal Clearance Form )

Animal Facility Training
All animal users and caretakers who enter central animal facilities at HSC or Life Sciences (i.e. OLAR facilities) must receive appropriate facility training by the Director or assigned staff of the facility.

Species-Specific Training
All animal users and caretakers are required to have appropriate training for the handling and husbandry of the species used, as relevant to the nature of the animal use. This training may be provided by the attending veterinarian, animal care staff or course instructor, as appropriate.

Procedure Training
All animal users who perform or assist procedures using animals are required to have appropriate training in these procedures. This training may be provided by the attending veterinarian, animal care staff or course instructor, as appropriate.

Special Room or Topic Training
For animal users who utilize special purpose rooms in OLAR animal facilities (i.e. necropsy, surgery room, etc.), specific training in the protocol for the use of these rooms is required.
